Technique:

The Five Whys & Five Hows: When facing a decision, alternate between asking "Why?" and "How?" five times. Start with "Why is this important?" to zoom out strategically. Then ask "How can we achieve this?" to focus on tactics. Repeat, going deeper each time. This practice builds agility in connecting strategy to implementation.

Consider Time Horizons

Evaluating decisions and actions across different timeframes.

Technique:

The 10/10/10 Rule: Before finalizing any significant decision, consider its potential consequences in 10 days, 10 months, and 10 years. This simple check encourages balancing short-term tactics with long-term strategy.

Weigh Trade-Offs

Critically examining the costs and benefits from both strategic and tactical viewpoints.

Technique:

The Opposite Action Challenge: For each decision, argue convincingly for the opposite of your initial instinct. If you're leaning tactical, make a case for strategy, and vice versa. This cognitive behavioral technique helps overcome biases and ensures balanced evaluation.

Invite Collaboration

Engaging with diverse perspectives to enrich your strategic and tactical thinking.

Technique:

The Cross-Functional Shadow: Periodically, spend a half-day shadowing someone in a different function or level. If you're typically strategic, shadow a tactical role; if tactical, shadow a strategic colleague. This experiential learning practice broadens your perspective and strategic-tactical range.

These practices strengthen the muscles that connect vision to results. Start with one tactic this week. The more you toggle between strategic depth and tactical precision, the more natural this leadership rhythm will become.
